Australia: Understanding about the afterhours GP helpline

Australia: Understanding about the afterhours GP helpline

OSHCstudents – You can connect with a healthcare professional from your home, from work, or from wherever is most convenient, using your device — smartphone, tablet or desktop computer.

When you call the afterhours GP helpline, a registered nurse will assess you and based on your symptoms, the nurse may offer you a phone call or a video call from a GP. The GP will contact you within 15 minutes or 1 hour depending on the urgency of your health issue and the post code you are calling from. You can either choose a phone call or a video call.

At the end of your call, you will be offered a care advice summary, sent to you by SMS or email, so you can easily recall the details of the advice you are given.

You can also agree to have a summary of your call sent to your regular GP’s practice overnight, so they are aware of the call when they open their surgery the following day. The afterhours GP helpline can also upload a summary of your call to your My Health Record.

If you are calling from outside the major cities, the afterhours GP helpline is available:

  • Monday to Friday, 6pm – 7:30am
  • Saturday, from midday
  • Sunday and Public Holidays, all day

Note: 24 hours health advice you can count on 1800 022 222

If you hold a valid Student visa at the time you apply for the Subclass 485 visa, you will already be covered under an Overseas Student Health Cover policy as a condition of your Student visa requirement. Your existing OSHC is considered acceptable health insurance at the time you lodge your 485 visa application and you should submit evidence of this with your visa application.
